Chipping Yips

Are the Chipping Yips an Emotional State of Mind?

Are you suffering from the chipping yips? Don’t worry about it, you are not alone. Many pro golfers have suffered the consequences of having the chipping yips. Check out the video below which discusses what causes the yips and what you can do to fix them. Its pretty scary how badly and how easily we all can be affected!

The chipping yips are a golfer’s worst nightmare. It has been shown that those suffering from the yips, on average, add 5.5 shots to their game. 5.5 shots!!

The physical reactions of having the chipping yips include freezing, twitching, jerks and tremors. All of which can prove to be very uncomfortable, let alone embarrassing. These last two elements add to your mental distress, along with anxiety and self-consciousness. The chipping yips have a tendency to stick with a golfer for a long period of time; I wouldnt want to go too far and say that many golfers will end up quitting the very game they once loved, but some pros have dropped off the circuit because they couldnt shake those darn yips!

But what I do know is that the golfer starts to focus on what is causing the chipping yips. They become so involved in trying to deduce what started the yips that their entire golf game starts to disintegrate. The conditions resulting from having the chipping yips are involuntary. No matter how you attempt to control them, you just can’t. Not to mention the rest of your game!

So what are you supposed to do?

First you want to understand that the chipping yips, or more correctly the ‘yips’, affect other players in different sports and professions. Many dart players, cricket players, dentists, typists, and musicians have all suffered from the yips.

What is interesting, in regards to the chipping yips, is that some players are actually becoming cured of their affliction. They are enjoying the game once again, with no signs of the chipping yips returning.

How is this being achieved?

Some medical researchers maintain that chipping yips in golfers are caused by an underlying emotional factor. Some doctors are using a process, which is similar to acupuncture, with great results. Tests were run on some golfers who had the chipping yips on about 70% of their shots. After treatment, this rate decreased dramatically. The golfers concerned had reported not feeling any type of jerking or freezing sensations in their arms or hands.

What this means for you as a golfer is that if you are suffering from the chipping yips, you want to take a look at how you are feeling. Have you become so stressed out over your chipping yips, that this one factor is the cause of your problem? Worrying incessantly over the yips has been proven to make things worse, not better.

Your best course of action would be to take some time to practice your shots outside of a golf game. Pressure of making the shot has vanished, and you can easily concentrate on perfecting your chip shots and short game.

Maybe, you have just been taking the game of golf too seriously. Take a step back, and think about why you started to play in the first place. Get the enjoyment factor back into your golf game, and most importantly start to relax.

If you are concerned about your chipping yips, a trip to the doctor might be in order; to diminish any possibility of a nerve or joint disorder. Once you have the all clear, make the effort to play your next round of golf for enjoyment and pleasure; not to go out and win.
