Chipping Putters – how to perfect your golf swing when using chipping putters

The whole aim of chipping putters is to get the golf ball to travel with the least amount of distance in the air,then just roll to the green. What seems to happen to most golfers is that they have the tendency to look up too soon, before they have finished playing their chipping putter shot. This usually throws off their golf swing and the ball does not go where the golfer had intended it to.

This causes one of the biggest issues in golf, not understanding the mechanics of a golf swing. By looking up too soon, the ball is hit into the air too steeply which sends the ball on a line drive instead.

When you play with a driver or iron, you normally hit the ball with a full swing. When using chipping putters to make a shot, you need to hit the ball very softly so it is carried to the target. A well executed chip shot is done with finesse. A small amount of loft should be achieved and then the ball should gracefully roll along the green to the target.

Most golfers will try to make their chip shot slower when using chipping putters. This is actually not the best method to use. This normally leads to physical mistakes and chip shots which fly in the wrong direction. The best thing to do is try to keep the wrist off the leading hand straight when using the chipping putter. This helps you keep your normal golf swing but with a softer impact. Remember that the chip shot when played with the chipping putter needs to be soft and smooth.

Learning how to judge distances is very important when playing with chipping putters. If you find yourself over hitting, then you are not taking into account how much the ball will roll. Start trying to hit the ball only a third of the way towards the hole. The ball will overrun this distance and land nearer if not in the hole. This will take plenty of practice but can definitely be achieved.

Depending upon the distance you are trying to chip your shot to, you can pick different irons to be your chipping putter. A pitching wedge will travel through the air more and roll less. A number 7 or 8 iron is the closest iron that will travel through the air and roll about the same. The lower the iron, the less flight time and the more roll you will gain. It will take practice to learn which iron to use for what conditions and distances, so try several and see the different results. Remember to take the length of the grass into consideration as well. This can affect the length of the roll.

Using chipping putters to make a putt shot is probably the easiest shot to control. If you are close enough to the hole, why not just take a putt shot instead?
