Chipping Grip

Chipping Grip – Perfect your Chip Shot

Are you finding that you simply cannot work chip shots correctly? Then maybe learning a more efficient chipping grip is going to benefit you. After all these years playing with your friends, you might actually be embarrassed to attempt a chip shot, but once you have mastered a new chipping grip, the basic chip shot will become like second nature for you. Its not going to happen overnightthough – I always stress to my students that practice makes perfect!

Once you understand how this technique works, all you have to do is to allow the loft of the club to do the rest of the work for you. To become adept at the chipping grip and the chip shot you have to perfect a few things.

Make it a point to concentrate on your stance, the golf ball needs to be at the back of your stance. Ideally your hands will be in front of the ball and the shaft should be leaning towards your target area. The best foot placement for the grip and shot is when your feet are close. The movement for the chip shot should be coming from your upper body alone. This is very important – if you start using your arms and wrists the ball could fly off in any direction.

Once you learn to stand in the correct position with the chipping grip, you will automatically connect with the lower half of the golf ball. This is what you want to achieve.

You are probably having difficulty with your chip shot because of your grip. The chipping grip as it is known is the same grip you use when putting. This grip allows you to control your movements with your shoulders. There should not be any action from your hands.

A simple way to practice the chipping grip, is to take a wedge and then grip it as though you are holding your putter.  The position of the whole wedge should be a bit more upright as opposed to holding the putter. But you have to remember, chipping is actually the ‘big brother’ of putting – try and use the same technique.

This small change to the chipping grip gives you more chance of playing a good chip shot. This is one of those golf shots, that the club and not your body does the work. If you watch pro golfers you will see that when they execute the chip shot, they use a very slight action each time.

Keep in mind that you don’t want to help the ball, never try to give it a push or nudge. If this does occur then it simply means you are using your hands too much and your chip shot will go awry. By holding the club with the chipping grip you can ace the shot by using a small rocking action. Your shoulders should be what controls this rocking motion.

The easiest way for this to work is to simply lead with your left hand. Using the correct technique on the chipping grip, and the proper stance as you hit the ball, you will automatically come down in the right position onto the ball. If you manage to keep most of your weight on your front foot this will be made much easier. It is vital for your hands to arrive in front of the club before impact on the ball.

Just by practicing the above steps you can learn how to master the chip shot. You will never be worried or embarrassed about attempting this kind of shot again. Even though the chipping grip might feel awkward at first, working through this will really help you improve your chances of acing your chip shots more often. Wouldn’t you just love to be the golfer with the best chip shot on the golf green? Well folks, it can happen!
